Insecurity Rising Ahead of 2027 Polls Due to Political Sponsorship, Says Akpabio

Amid growing concerns over the state of Nigeria’s security architecture, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that the recent surge in insecurity across the country is politically motivated and linked to the approaching 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Tuesday at the commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service headquarters in Abuja, Akpabio claimed that certain actors are deliberately sponsoring violence to create instability ahead of the polls.

According to him, the pattern of insecurity tends to intensify during election periods, suggesting that the current spike in attacks is not coincidental.

“You are seeing insecurity today; it’s even increasing because the election is coming. Once the elections are over, within weeks, such incidents will reduce significantly because some people are sponsoring them to distract the government,” he said.

The Senate President, however, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as resilience in governance, insisting that the administration remains focused despite attempts to derail it through security challenges.

Akpabio further argued that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to expand its political influence, noting that a growing number of state governors have aligned with the party. He dismissed opposition claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state.

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, he said political tensions are expected but maintained that the ruling party remains firmly in control both at the federal and state levels.

The Senate President also criticised opposition parties for internal disorganisation, suggesting that their inability to present a united front has weakened their electoral prospects.

On the controversy surrounding the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Akpabio downplayed allegations of partisanship, arguing that individuals are entitled to personal opinions before assuming public office.

He urged political actors to focus on strengthening democratic institutions rather than undermining them with unfounded accusations.
