The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has as part of its efforts to increase awareness of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) in Nigeria, announced a webinar in collaboration with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Scheduled for Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 11:00 AM WAT, the webinar aims to promote DNSSEC validation and ensure Nigeria achieves increased awareness by the end of the year.

The goal of the webinar is to have at least 50% DNSSEC validation in the country by the end of the year, as noted in a notice posted on the NCC’s verified social media account.

The Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) is a suite of specifications developed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to enhance the security of the Domain Name System (DNS).

The DNS serves as the internet’s phonebook, translating human-friendly domain names into IP addresses that enable computers to locate and communicate with each other on the network.

By implementing DNSSEC, website owners can significantly improve their site’s security and safeguard their users from potential threats. DNSSEC achieves this by introducing digital signatures to DNS data, ensuring that the DNS responses received are authentic and have not been tampered with during transit.

As cyber threats continue to grow in sophistication and frequency, adopting DNSSEC becomes increasingly crucial for maintaining the integrity of the internet infrastructure and protecting users from malicious attacks.

The collaboration between the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and ICANN in hosting a DNSSEC awareness webinar emphasizes the importance of promoting and implementing these security extensions in Nigeria and across the global internet community.
