TotalEnergies is no doubt a global energy player which has contributed immensely to the uplifting of the socio-economic lives of it host communities across the globe through it sustainable development activities.

One of the cardinal objectives of the company is to impact positively the lives of the people where it operates. This it is effectively doing in Nigeria also.

Its Sustainable development activities in Nigeria is very impressive when compared to what many other oil companies are doing.

The company, no doubt is living to its billing of being a  responsible energy major in the Nigerian extractive industry, which it believes can only be achieved by integrating sustainability into its business, so that it  can continue to meet the energy needs of as many people as possible, not just today but in the future.

To achieve this, the company’s business operations and activities address global warming, ensure safety, respect for human rights, as well as create value for its stakeholders across host communities and the country.

“All these we do while minimising the negative  environmental impact our operations,” the company said.

At TotalEnergies in Nigeria, sustainability is integrated across six levels. These are Strategy and Operations, Host country and Local communities, Shareholders, its Employees suppliers and business partners, and its customers.

TotalEnergies as a leader in sustainable development has brought comfort and succor to it host communities and this has consequently led to poverty alleviation.

The alleviation of poverty has in no small measures enhanced the objectives of the World Bank’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) operations.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

For instance, the company’s stakeholder’s engagement actions in 2019 were hinged on the philosophy of building trust with communities and other stakeholders.  These engagements and partnerships help it deepen the impact of it projects and broaden their reach.

On the socio-economic development front, it has made investments substantially in education sector and funds other initiatives across various sectors of the economy including the health and agricultural sectors.

In 2019, the company provided scholarships to over 3,000 students, donated books, built, and equipped science laboratories to support access to quality education.

The social impact of its activities is visible both at the national level and the local communities.

According to the company in its 2019 sustainability report, it says:  “In ensuring that no one is left behind by 2030 according to the SDGs, we invest purposefully to deepen our positive impact and reduce the negative. While progress has been made in aligning with SDG goals, positive impact can be accelerated by measuring the effectiveness of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS)”

“In 2019, our approach aimed to identify and mitigate past and current impacts. That is why we empowered Nigerians through different initiatives such as youth Konnect for peace, Totalpreneur and startupper

As we strive to align core business objectives with solving relevant social problems, we are anticipating future impact.”

As par Corporate Social Responsibility, Total Societal activities are implemented by three districts tasked with delivering the CSR policy through a shared value approach.

The Corporate performance borders on helping the CRS entity Identify strengths and opportunities. The corporate entity drive decisions and actions crucial in ensuring it social actions and sustainable in the future.

Here two programmed were initiated towards advancing  the Total Foundation priority areas of safety on  roads and youth inclusion.

The maiden schools art painting competition ‘platettes and Strokes’ was a successful effort towards promoting cultural dialogue and heritage

Deepwater District increased focus on its neighborhood communities in all geopolitical zones of the country by 23 percent. In 2019, the district recorded progress by delivering 10 projects through the project management strategy. This milestone enabled the company to reach even the volatile parts of the country that were challenging to reach in previous years.

The projects include water boreholes projects providing 2,000litre of water for 1,000 households daily, maternal and child referral centres projected to impact at 600 patients in each location.

Through its collaboration with entrepreneurship experts. The women and youth development centre commenced the skills acquisition training for 200 women and youth.

The Port Harcourt District, which holds significant onshore operations, has the highest spend on societal actions 72 percent.
