ABUJA — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restored four previously suppressed State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi states following court judgments directing their reinstatement.
The electoral commission said three of the restored constituencies are in Delta State, while one is in Kogi State.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, announced the development in a statement on Friday.
The restored constituencies are Abraka, Isoko North II and Ughelli South II in Delta State, and Yagba West II in Kogi State.
According to the commission, the restoration follows judgments by the courts directing INEC to reinstate the constituencies for electoral purposes.
Party Primaries Scheduled for August
INEC said political parties have been given August 21–25, 2026 to conduct primaries for candidates seeking to contest the restored constituencies.
The dates coincide with the scheduled period for party primaries for upcoming bye-elections into other vacant legislative seats across the country.
The affected bye-election constituencies include Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Disina and Sakwa State Constituencies in Bauchi State; Udu State Constituency in Delta State; and Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State.
INEC has scheduled the bye-elections for September 19, 2026.
The commission said all other activities and deadlines already contained in its revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections would apply to the four restored constituencies.
INEC Calls for Compliance by Political Parties
INEC urged political parties intending to participate in the elections to submit formal notices of their primary elections to the commission ahead of the scheduled dates.
The commission said the submission of notices would enable it to effectively monitor the parties’ nomination processes and ensure compliance with the electoral timetable.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting elections that are credible, inclusive and transparent.
The restoration of the four constituencies is expected to expand electoral representation in the affected areas and ensure that voters in the constituencies participate in future legislative elections in line with the court directives.
