Nigeria’s campaign against terrorism and banditry has received a boost as the United States government delivered critical military supplies to the Nigerian Armed Forces in support of ongoing security operations.

The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) disclosed this in a statement posted on its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, noting that the supplies were formally handed over to Nigerian authorities in Abuja.

According to AFRICOM, the delivery highlights Washington’s continued commitment to deepening its security partnership with Nigeria.
“U.S. forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja. This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasises our shared security partnership,” the command stated, tagging the United States Mission in Nigeria, @USinNigeria.

Reports by The Punch noted that the latest support comes amid sustained efforts by Nigeria and its international partners to strengthen capacity in tackling security challenges across the country.

In November 2025, the Bola Tinubu-led administration appealed to the United States for military assistance to help combat terrorism in parts of the federation. The appeal was made by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, while responding to the United States’ decision to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

Following the request, an airstrike was reportedly carried out on December 25, 2025, in collaboration with Nigerian authorities. The Federal Government subsequently confirmed ongoing security and intelligence cooperation with the United States after the operation, which targeted terrorist positions in the North-West.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reaffirmed that Nigeria remains engaged in “structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America,” to address terrorism and violent extremism.

The ministry explained that the collaboration includes intelligence sharing, strategic coordination and other forms of support, conducted in line with international law, respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and shared security commitments.

Meanwhile, U.S. Congressman Riley Moore described the airstrikes as “a decisive move to protect Christian communities and tackle the ongoing security crisis in the country.”
