Tinubu Commends NDLEA After $360 Million Drug Bust Targets Nigerian-Mexican Syndicate

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency following the dismantling of a major transnational drug trafficking network involving Nigerian and Mexican operatives.

The operation, described by authorities as one of the agency’s most significant breakthroughs in recent years, resulted in the arrest of foreign nationals, suspected local drug kingpins, and several collaborators linked to a sophisticated illicit drug production and distribution network.

According to the NDLEA, chemicals and narcotics valued at more than $360 million were seized during coordinated raids carried out after weeks of intelligence gathering and collaboration with international security partners.

Tinubu Praises NDLEA’s “Exceptional Professionalism”

In a statement released after the announcement by NDLEA Chairman Mohammed Buba Marwa, President Tinubu commended the agency’s operatives for what he described as a landmark achievement against organised crime.

The President said the operation demonstrated “exceptional professionalism, courage, and unwavering commitment” in protecting Nigerian society from the dangers posed by narcotics trafficking and illegal drug production.

He also urged security agencies to sustain pressure on criminal networks and avoid complacency in the fight against drug trafficking.

West Africa Under Growing Pressure From Drug Trafficking Networks

President Tinubu warned that West Africa has increasingly become a strategic transit corridor for global narcotics trafficking, with international cartels using the region to move cocaine, synthetic drugs, and unregulated pharmaceuticals to markets in Europe and North America.

Security analysts and international anti-narcotics agencies have repeatedly identified West Africa as a growing hub for transnational organised crime due to expanding trafficking routes, weak border controls in some areas, and rising domestic drug consumption.

The President noted that the drug trade poses not only a major security challenge but also a social and economic threat, particularly to young people vulnerable to addiction and criminal exploitation.

Economic and Security Implications

The bust comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to improve domestic security, strengthen law enforcement cooperation, and enhance its global anti-money laundering and anti-trafficking credentials.

Analysts say large-scale narcotics operations often intersect with broader criminal activities including money laundering, arms smuggling, cybercrime, and cross-border financial crimes that can undermine investor confidence and regional stability.

The seizure of illicit drugs and precursor chemicals worth hundreds of millions of dollars also highlights the scale of the underground narcotics economy operating across parts of Africa.

Tinubu Calls for Public Cooperation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called on Nigerians to support anti-drug efforts by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.

He said the successful operation sends a strong signal that Nigerian authorities will not tolerate organised crime or threats to national security.

“This landmark success is a strong message that our security agencies will not tolerate organised crime and criminality anywhere in the country,” the President said.
