The Sahara Group Foundation has commissioned two new Sahara Go Recycling Hubs in Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos, expanding community access to sustainable waste management solutions and reinforcing its environmental sustainability agenda.

The newly launched facilities are the 18th and 19th recycling hubs established under the Sahara Go Recycling Initiative, a programme designed to promote responsible waste management, improve resource recovery, and create economic opportunities through structured recycling and waste-to-wealth systems.

The commissioning of both hubs on the same day marks a significant milestone in the Foundation’s efforts to drive inclusive environmental development and strengthen community participation in recycling activities across Lagos.

Sahara Group Targets Sustainable Communities Through Recycling

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Director of Sahara Group Foundation, Chidilim Menakaya, said the initiative reflects the Foundation’s long-term commitment to practical, community-driven sustainability solutions.

“The commissioning of these Sahara Go Recycling Hubs in Ojodu reflects our commitment to creating sustainable ecosystems that empower communities,” Menakaya said.

“By bringing structured recycling solutions closer to residents, we are not only promoting environmental responsibility but also creating opportunities for households to derive economic value from recycling activities.”

She added that the project demonstrates how collaborative action can support livelihoods, strengthen local resilience, and promote sustainable development through the Foundation’s EXTRApreneurship model.

The event attracted representatives of Sahara Group, officials of Ojodu LCDA, community leaders, volunteers, development partners, and residents, highlighting growing stakeholder support for community-based environmental initiatives.

Ojodu LCDA Commends Private Sector Sustainability Partnership

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Chairman of Ojodu LCDA, David Olusegun Odunmbaku, the Chief of Staff, Olaide Bello, praised the Foundation’s continued investment in environmental sustainability and community development.

According to Bello, the recycling hubs align with the council’s broader sustainability priorities by reducing environmental pollution, supporting climate action goals, and creating income-generating opportunities for residents.

“This Recycling Hub is both timely and impactful for the people of Ojodu LCDA, particularly because of its strategic location within the community,” he said.

“The initiative aligns strongly with our sustainability and development priorities by transforming waste into valuable resources, reducing environmental impact, supporting climate action, and creating livelihood opportunities for residents.”

Sahara Go Recycling Initiative Records Growing Impact

Since its launch, the Sahara Go Recycling Initiative has recorded measurable environmental and socio-economic impact across underserved communities in Lagos.

According to the Foundation, the programme has facilitated the recycling of more than 1,000 tonnes of recyclable materials while directly and indirectly supporting over 2,000 livelihoods through waste collection, sorting, logistics, and community-based enterprise opportunities.

The initiative is also helping to reshape public attitudes toward recycling by promoting environmental awareness, sustainable lifestyles, and circular economy practices.

Sahara Group Foundation said it plans to expand the Sahara Go Recycling Initiative across more communities in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria as part of its broader mission to build sustainable societies through inclusive economic empowerment and environmental stewardship.
