Oil and Gas Stakeholders Laud President Tinubu Over NNPCL Team,  Express Worries on Lack of Gender Diversity

Reactions continue to trail the appointments f of new helmsmen at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), with some hailing and others being skeptical if the cultural backgrounds of most of the people there would not be an inhibition to the new team achieving the real objectives of the president.

The only minus in the appointments is that there is no gender diversity, a situation which the women folks are not likely to take lightly.

The cultural settings of NNPCL are quite at variance from the cultural settings of some of the key actors in the new team. Not only this, some have asked the question as to whether they would be able to cope with the politics of interference that has pervaded the NNPCL landscape from the beginning. For instance, would they  able to say when the presidency come calling  demanding that they should  bring out  money to fund  its activities which are not in tune with  setting up a limited liability company?

Will the Shell culture prevail over the NNPCL culture without any conflict? That is, will there not be resistance from within the NNPCL to some policies Bayo Ojulari would want to introduce. That is, some of the things he did at Shell as the managing director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production  Company (SNEPCO,)and they have worked with good results?

Remember Emmanuel Ibe Kachukwu,  a  man  who came from ExxonMobil and wanted to do things differently and was resisted  even by the presidency that appointed him because  it was not going to favour some interests.

Mr  Bayo Ojulari may however be guided by the likes of Bello Rabiu, David Ige and even Austin Avuru who  still  have the institutional memory of NNPC on how best to pilot the affairs of the company in order to get to promised land.

However, given the fact that team is completely made of technocrats, it is expected that they will turn things around in no distance future if there is minimal political interference.

With all these said, the general opinion is that the appointments are good given views expressed so far by industry operators, except that there is no gender diversity.

Here’s how  stakeholders are reacting

Dan Kunle,  an Energy consultant:  “Ladies and Gentlemen, this board is a technical board as I have always advocated. Congratulations to the President and all Nigerians, including myself.

All of the members of the board have core competencies. They have Good pedigrees and can be found worthy in the global Energy industry. Nigeria is lucky to have these and many more of these Calibers.

Now the work began, the MD CEO, must assemble his best team of management staff that will drive the operations of NNPC LTD.

We need a total overhaul, reconfigure the management team, blend it up with brilliant and strong Competent Ladies. Legal services, Commercial and Financial Accounting must be strengthened to allow for confidence from investors all over the world.

“Most of the Subsidiaries of NNPC LTD must be yank off to stand on their own and subsequently privatised, such as the Refineries and NNPC E&P in Benin.”

“ I am inclined to suggest that most of the key positions are head haunted globally. This will assist the new Board to attract the best brains for the industry recovery in Nigeria. It will also help the NNPC IPO because investors will Trust the entire management team and processes.”

“ Nigeria must not miss it again at this very last attempt to recover the industry. Mr President has finally done the right thing, but my greatest fear is in the Work to be done. I hope it is not too late.

May I, in my own little way as an ordinary citizen congratulate the new Appointees, wishing them Success in the endeavours ahead. Your collective responsibility and success in this onerous assignment will definitely shape the economic and political future of Nigeria.

Please, let National interest override all issues and critical decisions to be deliberated and decided by your noble Team.

I am an incurable optimist about Nigeria and surely, Mr President has further reinforced my trust in our capacity as Nigerians. Aliko Dangote and  his likes are the same individuals who have continued to help us build more confidence in our great Country, for their impressive achievements in Commerce and Industry.

Looking forward to seeing you drive our industry and Country in the most constructive trajectories and value additions. We need more oil and gas out of the ground for cash to build and diversifies our Economy.

Long Live President Bola Tinubu, and Forever Nigeria Remain Great.

Dan D Kunle contributed this from Dubai, UAE.

Abiodun Adesanya, Managing Consultant at DNL , said: “A good appointment, technically sound people who are professional in their own right. They should be some measureable free hands. It portrays a good team.”

He said they would be able to adequately address the issue of divestment, because they are experienced in that field.

Another industry analyst that does not want his name mentioned, said the team is good but was worried about the issue of cultural differences between the new team and the NNPCL. “Some of them were reporting to Hague before now, but now, they would have to report to President Tinubu In Abuja,”

According to him, the working culture of international oil companies (IOC) are different from that of NNPCL, so how would the two be married for the overall benefits of the nation, he asked

He however, said, it all depends on the space they have to operate with, as the Presidency would certainly slow down their movements.

A former staff of NNPC, Dr Bako: “All of them understand the business very well especially the GCEO, Chairman, the NNPC guys. Obih is very good. Level headed

A former staff of NNPC, Dr Bako, said, government has given them a steer already. It wasn’t mentioned but to reposition the company.

“Our expectation is that not one person will be a dominant force.”

Babajide Soyede, also a former staff of NNPC describes the appointment as: “Most professional Board Constitution in history, to date. They are also already successful and satisfied. Hence, we should expect the best from them”

Ronke Onadeko,  an energy consultant was more concerned about the non inclusion of  women in the team.  “Shockingly, female representation is lacking again…:” she said.
