The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched a strategic repositioning of the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) with the appointment of Princess Oforitsenere Emiko as Interim Chairman of the institute’s Governing Board.

The Commission said the move is part of efforts to transform DBI into a stronger centre for digital skills development, innovation and research capable of supporting Nigeria’s expanding technology-driven economy.

The appointment was disclosed in a statement issued on June 8, 2026, by NCC Director of Public Affairs, Nnenna Ukoha.

Princess Emiko will serve alongside Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, and Ms. Rimini Makama, Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management, who have also been appointed as interim board members.

The interim board is expected to work with DBI President and Chief Executive Officer, David Daser, as well as existing board members whose appointments remain valid, to implement the institute’s transformation agenda.

Established by the NCC in May 2004, the Digital Bridge Institute was created as a specialised training institution focused on telecommunications and information technology.

However, the Commission said rapid technological advancement and the expansion of the telecom industry into a wider digital economy require a new approach to skills development, innovation and research.

The NCC noted that modern communications infrastructure has become central to economic growth, national development and digital sovereignty, making it necessary for DBI to evolve beyond traditional training programmes.

The Commission also emphasised the need to prepare Nigeria’s youthful population for opportunities in emerging technologies.

With about 70 per cent of Nigerians below the age of 30, the repositioning of DBI is designed to strengthen digital competencies, bridge skills gaps and improve technology adoption across sectors.

New Focus Areas for Digital Transformation

Under the new strategy, DBI will focus on five major areas:

  • Education and professional training
  • Research and development
  • Innovation and technology advancement
  • Economic impact and growth
  • Emerging digital policy and regulation

The NCC said the transformation plan was developed through consultations with key stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Federal Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).

The Commission expressed confidence that the new leadership structure would strengthen DBI’s role in developing a highly skilled workforce and supporting Nigeria’s ambition to become a competitive player in the global digital economy.

The initiative comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to expand digital infrastructure, promote innovation and build local capacity to meet the demands of emerging technologies.
