Ekperikpe Ekpo, has flagged off the North-East Decade of Gas Clean Cooking (LPG) Grassroots Penetration Programme, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling the North-East region’s energy challenges and ensuring clean energy becomes accessible and affordable for all.

A statement by Ekpo’s spokesman, Louis Ibah, quoted him acknowledging the North-East’s significant energy challenges and expressing determination to make clean energy accessible and affordable.

“We recognize the North-East has faced significant energy challenges, and we’re determined to make clean energy accessible and affordable to all.”

Ekpo, who made the pledge during the programme’s launch in Maiduguri, Borno State, emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to making LPG available and affordable for all Nigerians. “Through collaborative efforts, we can achieve our vision of a gas-powered Nigeria.”

He noted the Decade of Gas Initiative aims to transform Nigeria into a gas-powered economy, ensuring no region is left behind. Ekpo urged beneficiaries to seize the opportunity for a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle as LPG cylinders were distributed.

He lauded Governor Babagana Zulum’s unwavering support and highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s clean cooking initiative, aiming to convert 250,000 homes annually to LPG use. This initiative addresses maternal and youth deaths caused by inhaling carbon monoxide and poisonous gases from traditional cooking fuels.

Ekpo emphasized adopting LPG supports a sustainable energy mix, reduced carbon emissions, and provides cleaner air, reduced deforestation, and mitigated health risks.

Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman, highlighted women’s struggles relying on firewood and emphasized the government’s commitment to transitioning one million households to clean cooking gas by 2030.

Coordinating Director, Decade of Gas, Mr. Ed Ubong, reiterated industry support for the Gas to Prosperity theme and thanked MEMAN, NNPCL, and sponsor groups for the event’s success.
