THE CENTRE for Democracy and Development (CDD West Africa) on Friday announced the appointment of Dr. Dauda Garuba as its substantive Director, stating that the appointment is with immediate effect.
The CDD announcement, while noting that Dr Garuba’s “academic and professional expertise makes him the right leader for CDD at this important time in Nigeria and West African history”, also stated that he “is no stranger to CDD, having worked as a programs officer at CDD from 2004-2007 and a senior programmes officer till 2008” before working at the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) from 2008 to 2017, coordinating programmes that focused on Nigeria.
According to CDD, Garuba’s extensive background encompasses over two decades of experience in democratic governance, natural resource management, and public policy.
Garuba holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History from the University of Ilorin; a Masters in Political Science, as well as a Doctorate in Political Science, with a specialisation in International Relations, both from the University of Benin, Nigeria.
The announcement further stated that “Dr Garuba’s scholarly work is widely recognised, with numerous publications in both local and international research outlets. His network spans local, national, sub-regional, and continental spheres, underscoring his capacity to foster collaborative efforts and drive impactful initiatives.
“Dr Dauda is no stranger to CDD, having worked as a programs officer from 2003 to 2005, and a senior programmes officer till 2008. He worked at the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) from 2008 to 2017, coordinating programmes that focused on Nigeria.
“He also worked as Technical Adviser and Senior Consultant at the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) from 2017 to 2021, before engaging in independent research and consultant work with different development-focused organisations.”
It added: “His expertise covers a broad spectrum, including academic and development policy research and advocacy. His work addresses critical issues such as transparency, social accountability, conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and security sector reform. His academic and professional expertise makes him the right leader for CDD at this important time in Nigeria and West African history.
“As we embrace this new chapter, CDD also extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Sa’eed Husaini, who has served as acting director, and the senior management team for their work during the transition period.
“CDD also appreciates the work of its International Governing Council (IGC), under the leadership of its new chair, John Odah, for its work in handling the recruitment process and steering this transition.
“CDD remains confident that its primary objective of providing insightful and impactful research and programmatic support towards a democratic and developed West Africa will continue under its new leadership.”
