Jim Swartz – Chairman & Managing Director, Chevron Nigeria Limited
Chevron Nigeria and Mid-Africa (NMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action, highlighting ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing emissions, protecting biodiversity, and supporting responsible energy development.
The company committed as the world marked World Environment Day 2026 on June 5, with this year’s theme, “A Global Call for Climate Action,” focusing global attention on coordinated efforts to address climate challenges including rising temperatures, flooding, heatwaves, and water stress.
Chevron NMA said it remains focused on providing affordable, reliable, and increasingly cleaner energy while integrating environmental stewardship into its operations.
Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron NMA, Jim Swartz, said the company’s environmental strategy aligns with its broader principles of responsible operations, reducing environmental impact, lowering carbon intensity, and protecting ecosystems throughout the lifecycle of its assets.
“Guided by our commitment to environmental protection and awareness of the challenges posed by climate change, we continue to integrate responsible business practices across the lifecycle of our assets, from design and development to operations and retirement,” Swartz said.
According to Chevron NMA, its climate-related actions are centred on several operational priorities, including:
- Carbon-intensity reduction: Improving operational efficiency and implementing initiatives designed to reduce emissions intensity across operations.
- Flare reduction and gas utilisation: Expanding opportunities to reduce routine flaring while advancing gas development projects.
- Methane and venting management: Applying leak detection, repair programmes, monitoring technologies, and vent-gas capture measures where appropriate.
- Emissions monitoring and transparency: Supporting measurement, reporting, and verification processes to strengthen accountability and regulatory compliance.
Beyond emissions management, Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has also maintained long-standing environmental conservation programmes, including its partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) to establish the Lekki Conservation Centre in 1992.
The 78-hectare conservation facility serves as a centre for environmental education, research, and biodiversity protection within the Lekki Peninsula.
Chevron Nigeria has also supported environmental research and awareness initiatives, including an annual postgraduate scholarship programme for PhD research in environment and conservation, introduced in partnership with NCF since 2005.
The company continues to support environmental awareness programmes such as the annual S. L. Edu Memorial Lecture and the Walk for Nature initiative organised by the Lagos State Government and NCF.
Swartz said Chevron recognises biodiversity protection as a key component of sustainable development.
“We have a long history of collaborating with governments, communities, industry groups, regulators, and conservation groups on biodiversity initiatives in areas where we operate.”
Chevron NMA said it will continue working with stakeholders across government, communities, regulators, and environmental organisations to promote climate awareness and practical solutions that support a more sustainable future.
