Eterna Plc has appointed Okechukwu Ashiegbu as its new managing director, marking the company’s fifth leadership change in just four years and fueling fresh concerns among investors over executive stability and corporate governance at the Nigerian energy firm.

The latest exit involves Olumide Adeosun, who reportedly left the company shortly after Eterna’s Annual General Meeting held last week.  However, the company has yet to issue an official statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding his exit.

The leadership change came unexpectedly after the company’s chairman reportedly commended management performance during the AGM, only for Adeosun to leave the role days later. Observers say the sudden transition has intensified scrutiny of boardroom dynamics within the company.

Under Nigerian Exchange (NGX) disclosure rules, listed companies are expected to promptly notify the market of significant executive changes, including the resignation or removal of managing directors.

Eterna’s rapid executive turnover has become increasingly notable within Nigeria’s downstream oil sector. Since 2022, the company has rotated through multiple chief executives:

  • Nnamdi Obiagwu — exited March 2022
  • Benjamin Nwaezeigwe — exited March 2024
  • Abiola Lukman Lawal —  exited January 2025
  • Olumide Adeosun — exited May 2026
  • Okechukwu Ashiegbu — newly appointed Managing Director

The frequent leadership changes come after Rainoil Limited acquired Eterna in November 2021, a transaction that reshaped ownership and strategic direction at the company.

For investors and market analysts, the repeated executive reshuffles could raise concerns over long-term strategic execution, operational continuity, and shareholder confidence at a time when Nigeria’s energy sector is navigating regulatory reforms, currency volatility, and rising competition in downstream petroleum operations.

Founded as one of Nigeria’s earliest indigenous oil companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange, Eterna operates across fuel retailing, lubricant manufacturing, and energy distribution businesses.

The exit of Adeosun is coming  barely  one month  after the recapitalization exercise through Right Issue on NGX
