The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the digital connectivity initiative designed to provide high-quality telecoms services to underserved communities across Nigeria.
Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, has also stressed the current administration’s commitment to ensuring that all Nigerian consumers have accelerated access to reliable telecoms services in the digital ecosystem.
In regard to the significance of the digital transformation project, Dr. Tijani noted that the focus is not only to expand connectivity by service providers but also improve Quality of Service (QoS) and consumers’ Quality of Experience (QoE) in the country.
It is also noted that the initiative well aligns with Nigeria’s comprehensive strategy to advance digital transformation and 5G deployment in the telecoms space.
In terms of the benefits of the initiative also, the government’s plan to build 7,000 additional telecoms towers is regarded as a significant step towards achieving comprehensive digital coverage.
It will equally ensure that all Nigerian digital consumers can benefit from the opportunities provided by robust telecommunications networks.
Few years back, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had issued the Fifth Generation (5G) technology licences to major operators, including MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, Airtel Nigeria, and Mafab Communications Limited, to enhance progress in this regard.
Already, these Telcos have deployed 5G services to selected cities and towns in states across the country.
It was also learnt Airtel Africa pledged a $500 million investment to strengthen Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure, and by implication to the government’s drive to expand connectivity in the rural communities.
The telecoms company’s investment in telecoms infrastructure is expected to further boost the country’s connectivity, particularly in underserved regions, and contribute to the overall economic growth and digital inclusion in the ecosystem.
