The Global Shapers Community Hub in Ilorin on Wednesday received league of volunteers in their groups in Ilorin Climate Action project tagged, “Community Outreach and Cleanup.”
The Outreach and Cleaning exercise focused on two local Government Areas in Kwara State, they are; Alanamu Community, Ilorin West and Sabo Oke Community, Ilorin East, both communities benefited from the outreach and clean up exercise.
Oloruntoyosi Thomas, SSA to the Executive Governor of Kwara State on Non Government Affairs, had while addressing the groups, described the interest of volunteers as a selfless effort which worth emulation.
Kwara State Ministry of Environment and KWEPA also solidly played their role in the exercise.
The groups in the outreach include; Plogging Nigeria, Ilorin Club, Girl Up Evolve, The CEI Project, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Kwara, NYSC SDGs CDS group, JCI Nigeria University of Ilorin, Green Globe Initiative (GGI) and Meadows Community Development Outreach.
Kehinde Akinsola, Ilorin Hub Curator, explained that Ilorin Global Shapers Community is a network of innovative young people that come together from diverse professional backgrounds driven to solve problems in their communities.
He charged the general public to take actions that are going to affect our environment positively, noting that climate action is an inclusive step that requires contributions from everybody.
He said: “We came to the community to make them know about the benefits of hygiene based on the research carried out on climate change and geographic information that Alanamu is liable to flood.
“I encourage the people of Alanamu Community to take up from where we stop, and elders should encourage the young ones on personal hygiene and environmental sanitation.”
One of the volunteers, Bashir Atika, said the exercise is of great benefit to the host community, particularly in the aspect of health.
Shuaib Ajibola, in his part commended the initiative and urged the community to avoid climate disasters.
Ilorin Global Shapers Community was partnered by KwaraNGO, Ministry of Environment, Kwara State Environment Protection Agency, Kwara SDGs Office and Nigeria Police Force.
