President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged members of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to embrace unity, fairness and internal democracy as the party commences its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released before the start of the primaries, Tinubu described the exercise as a critical test of the party’s cohesion, resilience and democratic values as it prepares for its fourth electoral cycle since its formation.
The APC primaries begin with contests for House of Representatives candidates and will culminate in the party’s presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026.
Tinubu praised ongoing efforts by party leaders to adopt consensus arrangements in some states and constituencies, saying the process aligns with the Electoral Act and the APC constitution while helping to minimise internal disputes.
“I note the impressive progress made in this regard and encourage fellow party members to make the most of this window to ensure a seamless process and a more unified party,” the president said.
The Nigerian leader, however, stressed that where consensus arrangements fail, all aspirants and delegates must conduct themselves peacefully and democratically during the primaries.
He warned against divisive politics and urged victorious candidates to reconcile with opponents after the contests, while encouraging unsuccessful aspirants to use the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms rather than undermine party unity.
Tinubu also called on APC governors, party executives and other stakeholders to provide a level playing field for all aspirants, emphasizing that credible internal elections are essential to sustaining democratic legitimacy.
The president further appealed for greater inclusion of women and young people in the party’s candidate selection process, describing both groups as central to Nigeria’s political and economic future.
He also directed the police and other security agencies to remain neutral and professional throughout the primaries, limiting their role strictly to maintaining law and order.
Political analysts view the APC primaries as an early indicator of Nigeria’s political direction ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly as the ruling party seeks to maintain internal stability amid growing competition across the country’s political landscape.
