Two Policemen Injured As Hoodlums Attack Second Abia Divisional HQ In Four Days

…as 200 Level Student Commits Suicide

Two policemen have been injured in another attack on a Police Divisional Headquarters in Abia State, south-east Nigeria.

While many police stations have come under attack in the region in recent time, the latest incident makes it the second attack on police facilities in Abia since the beginning of the week.

 A group of hoodlums, in a large number, were said to have attacked the police station in the night and set it on fire.

While the two policemen injured during the attack have been taken to a hospital for medical attention, the police command vowed not to rest on its oars to fish out the perpetrators.

The attack occurred at about 10pm on Wednesday in Bende Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of Information in Abia, John Okiyi, confirmed the attack on the police station on Thursday.

He was of the opinion that Abia has remained one of the safest states, and called on those behind attacks on government facilities in the state to have a rethink.

In a similar development, two unknown gunmen have been killed in a joint operation carried out by the Nigerian Army, Air Force and the Police in Imo State, the state Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Abutu Yaro has said.

Yaro told journalists yesterday in Owerri, the state capital, that the bandits were killed in a gun battle between the military and the unidentified gunmen at Ikenanzizi in Obowo Local Government Area of the state.

He disclosed that two rifles, five motorcycles, a Lexus jeep and one 18- seater bus were recovered from the gunmen.

The commissioner further said that the operation was carried out in line with federal government’s resolve to rid the country of ravaging insecurity.

“It was a joint operation of the Army, Air Force and Police; two unknown gunmen were killed in the process and investigation is ongoing.

He however said that the team could lay hands on only one corpse as according to him, the hoodlums were able to escape with the second corpse.

Meanwhile in Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko community as a 200-level student of the institution has committed suicide.

20-year-old Feranmi Fasunle of the Department of Political Science was reported to have taken a poisonous chemical which resulted in her death.

According to a source from the university community, the deceased took the poison in her room and started gasping for breath.
