President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will not surrender to terrorists, bandits, or criminal groups, pledging renewed efforts to strengthen national security while addressing economic pressures affecting citizens.
The President gave the assurance during the 2026 Democracy Day National Inter-Denominational Church Service held in Abuja, where he said his administration remained committed to easing economic hardship, protecting lives and property, and ensuring the safe release of citizens held captive across the country.
The message was delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, at the service themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams.”
The event was attended by senior government officials, religious leaders, and other dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack.
Akume congratulated Nigerians on 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, describing the milestone as a reflection of the resilience and sacrifices of citizens and pro-democracy advocates who fought for the restoration of democratic rule.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 pro-democracy struggle, noting that many endured persecution, hardship, and personal sacrifices in pursuit of democratic freedoms.
The SGF said the Tinubu administration recognised the challenges confronting Nigerians, including rising living costs, insecurity, kidnappings, and displacement affecting some communities.
“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” Akume said.
He said the administration was taking steps to reduce socio-economic pressures through policies aimed at delivering sustainable development and improving citizens’ welfare.
On security, Akume said protecting Nigerians remained one of the Federal Government’s highest priorities, acknowledging that recent attacks and abductions demonstrated the need for continued action.
He assured citizens that security agencies were receiving increased support and resources to enhance their capacity to defend communities and restore stability.
“The government will never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” he said.
The SGF said the rescue of all persons held in captivity remained a national priority, adding that government agencies would continue working to ensure the return of abducted citizens.
He also warned against the growing risks associated with political violence and misinformation as preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually increase.
Akume urged young Nigerians to reject criminal activities, hate speech, ethnic divisions, religious intolerance, and online misinformation.
“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” he cautioned.
He called on religious leaders, traditional institutions, civil society groups, the media, and families to promote peace, tolerance, and responsible civic participation.
The SGF reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance, peaceful political engagement, and stronger institutions, saying the country’s democratic journey remained resilient despite ongoing security and economic challenges.
He also commended the Armed Forces and security agencies for their sacrifices in maintaining national stability and protecting democratic institutions.
As Nigeria prepares for another election cycle, Akume urged citizens to honour the legacy of June 12 by supporting peaceful elections, accountable leadership, secure communities, and inclusive national development. NAN
