Security: Bola Ahmed Tinubu Tasks Acting IGP Olatunji Disu with Crushing Banditry, Terror Networks

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to take decisive action against banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes threatening national stability, describing the moment as critical for Nigeria’s security architecture.

The President gave the charge on Wednesday during Disu’s decoration ceremony as Acting IGP, following the retirement of former police chief Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasised that Nigeria is confronted with complex and evolving security threats that require innovation, collaboration and firm leadership.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” the President said.

‘A Critical Moment for Policing’

Tinubu described Disu’s appointment as coming at a defining time for the country, urging him to restore public confidence in the police and strengthen operational synergy with other security agencies.

He charged the Acting IGP to advance the security objectives embedded in his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that safeguarding lives and property must remain paramount.

“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” Tinubu stated.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level, and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support.”

The President reaffirmed his confidence that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges under committed leadership and assured the new police boss of his administration’s full backing.

Disu’s Policing Track Record

Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to the rank of AIG last year.

He previously held strategic postings as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and later as Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, following his redeployment by Egbetokun.

A seasoned officer, Disu is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and formerly headed the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos Island, Disu enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. Over his more than three decades in service, he has served as Divisional Police Officer in Ago Iwoye (Ogun State), Ikare and Owo (Ondo State), as well as Elimbu and Elelenwo (Rivers State).

With deep operational experience spanning intelligence, investigations and field command, Disu now assumes leadership of the police at a time when Nigeria faces persistent threats from insurgency, organised crime and communal violence — challenges the President has urged him to confront with urgency and professionalism.
