NISO Restores Nigeria’s National Grid After Multiple 330kV Transmission Line Trippings

…System operator says disturbance affected only part of the grid, dismisses reports of a total collapse

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has restored normal operations on Nigeria’s national electricity grid following multiple trippings on the 330-kilovolt (kV) transmission network on Monday, October 19, 2026.

NISO said the disturbance occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m., prompting the immediate implementation of corrective measures in collaboration with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to stabilise the power system and restore normal operations.

In a statement, the system operator confirmed that restoration efforts had been completed successfully and that the national grid had returned to normal operation.

However, NISO clarified that the incident affected only part of the transmission network, dismissing reports circulating in the media suggesting that the entire national grid had collapsed.

The operator urged the public to disregard misleading information and rely on its official communication channels for accurate and verified updates on developments affecting Nigeria’s electricity transmission system.

The incident highlights the operational challenges involved in maintaining stability across Nigeria’s high-voltage transmission network, which transports electricity generated by power plants to distribution companies for onward supply to homes, businesses and industries.

Nigeria’s electricity sector continues to face challenges involving transmission infrastructure, grid stability and the reliable delivery of power to consumers. Disturbances on the transmission network can affect electricity supply across parts of the country, depending on the location and severity of the incident.

Although NISO confirmed that normal grid operations had been restored, the statement did not provide further details on the specific transmission lines involved or the technical causes of the multiple trippings.

The restoration marks the end of the reported disturbance, while the circumstances surrounding the incident remain subject to furth
