Nigeria Prize for Literature 2026: 11 Poetry Books Make Longlist for $100,000 NLNG Award
Eleven poetry collections have been selected for the longlist of the 2026 Nigeria Prize for Literature, advancing in the competition for the prestigious $100,000 award sponsored by the Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG).
The longlist was chosen from 223 entries submitted for this year’s edition, underscoring the growing depth and diversity of contemporary African poetry.
Announcing the longlist, Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Prize, Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, described the milestone as a significant stage in one of Africa’s most prestigious literary competitions, noting that the selected works reflect exceptional creativity, artistic excellence and intellectual depth.

Judges Highlight Literary Excellence and Cultural Depth
Professor Adimora-Ezeigbo said the longlisted collections demonstrate poetry’s enduring ability to illuminate human experience through cultural memory, historical reflection and artistic expression.
According to her, many of the works revisit history while questioning dominant historical narratives and examining the forces that shape collective identity and social relationships. Despite their varied themes, she noted, the books share a commitment to exploring resilience in the face of violence, oppression and social fragmentation.
She also praised the authors’ stylistic diversity, saying the collections employ lyrical intensity, symbolic depth and innovative poetic techniques.
“Many employ densely poetic, allegorical and elegiac modes that invite multiple layers of interpretation, while others draw extensively on folklore, oral traditions and contemporary realities to create a compelling fusion of past and present,” she said.
She added that the works use evocative language, vivid imagery and intellectual sophistication to address complex social issues while giving voice to both individual and collective experiences.
“The next stage will demand a closer reading of each work, with attention to language, form, originality and lasting literary value,” she added.
Next Stage: Shortlist in August, Winner in October
Professor Adimora-Ezeigbo commended the panel of judges for their rigorous assessment and reaffirmed the Advisory Board’s commitment to maintaining a transparent and credible selection process while promoting literary excellence and a stronger reading culture.
The announcement of the 11-book longlist marks the beginning of the next phase of the competition. A shortlist of three finalists is expected to be unveiled in August 2026, while the overall winner will be announced in October 2026.
Now in its 22nd year, The Nigeria Prize for Literature is regarded as one of Africa’s richest and most prestigious literary awards. Sponsored by Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), the prize carries a $100,000 cash award and rotates annually among four genres—prose fiction, poetry, drama and children’s literature. The 2026 edition is dedicated to poetry.
