The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) has announced the opening of entries for the 10th edition of its National Undergraduate Essay Competition, reinforcing its commitment to developing the next generation of professionals and innovators for Nigeria’s energy industry.
Applications will open on August 15, with undergraduate students in 100 and 200 levels from accredited Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education eligible to participate.
The 2026 edition focuses on the theme, “Promoting Manufacturing for Sustainable Local Content Development,” encouraging students to explore how stronger domestic manufacturing can enhance Nigeria’s industrial capacity, deepen local content, and reduce reliance on imported goods within the energy sector.
The annual competition has become one of NCDMB’s flagship educational initiatives, providing a platform for young Nigerians to contribute fresh ideas on national development while strengthening research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
According to a statement signed by Eyinimi Omorozi, Managing Director and Project Consultant for the competition, the initiative is designed to improve students’ research capabilities and inspire them to develop the knowledge and competencies required to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s energy sector and broader economic development.
Eligible students will be able to submit their essays through the official competition portal once applications open on August 15.
The competition will conclude with an award ceremony scheduled for October 22 at the NCDMB headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where outstanding participants will be recognised for their intellectual contributions and innovative ideas.
Over the past decade, the NCDMB National Undergraduate Essay Competition has evolved into a key platform for engaging young Nigerians on issues affecting the country’s industrialisation and local content agenda. By encouraging participants to propose practical solutions, the initiative supports broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s manufacturing base, improve competitiveness in the energy sector and promote sustainable economic growth.
The competition aligns with NCDMB’s broader mandate of developing indigenous capacity and fostering greater participation of Nigerian talent and businesses across the oil, gas and energy value chain.
